Ferst Readers of Henry County Annual Spring Luncheon
Join your friends, neighbors, colleagues, community leaders, and Ferst Readers of Henry County each Spring for good food, great entertainment, terrific door prizes, and a celebration of the impact we’ve made on the lives of children and families in Henry County.
Each year we are treated to entertainment by students in our school system and we enjoy entertaining guest speakers. The list of past keynote speakers includes Joshilyn Jackson (bestselling author), Monica Kaufman Pearson (treasured journalist), Walter Reeves (state horticulturalist), Lauretta Hannon (author, humorist, educator, NPR contributor), Ed Baker (editor, Atlanta Business Chronicle), and Judson Mitcham (Georgia Poet Laureate).
Some years, the program includes awarding the Harry Werner Distinguished Volunteer Award. Past honorees have included Carolyn Fuller (retired Director of Henry County Public Library System), and posthumous awards to Stella Patrick (retired educator) and Harry Werner (retired educator).
The Annual Spring Luncheon is a key event for raising funds to purchase and mail books to preschool children in Henry County. Every registered child receives one free, age-appropriate book each month from birth to age 5. That is a home library of 60 books! It costs us $40 to purchase and mail one book each month for one year. We currently have almost 2000 preschool children registered in Henry County.
Henry County Schools Fundraiser
Henry County Schools has partnered with Ferst Readers of Henry County for many years to raise awareness and funds for the purchase of Ferst books for preschool children in our community. A Champion in each participating school partners with a Mentor (member of Ferst Henry Community Action Team) to brainstorm and implement a fundraising effort in that school.
Fundraisers have included Crazy Hat/Hair Day, school dances, Teacher Jeans Day, Harry Potter Trivia Night, Penny Wars, Chili Cook Offs, Yard Sales, Read-a-Thons, Media Center Coffee Sales, etc.
During the 2018-2019 school year, a record number 21 schools participated and raised–$13,000! Those funds will allow 361 preschool children to receive one book each month for a year. Thank you Henry County Schools!!
Whether you are a school system employee or an interested community volunteer, we would love for you to join this effort. Please sign up to volunteer with the Ferst Readers/Henry County Schools Fundraisers.
